Squires Café
If you’ve ever ridden through the rolling countryside of North Yorkshire, chances are you’ve heard the unmistakable rumble of engines echoing near Sherburn-in-Elmet. That sound leads to one place: Squires Café Bar—the undisputed heart of the northern motorcycling community.
Known far and wide as the North of England’s answer to London’s iconic Ace Cafe, Squires isn't just a place to grab a hot mug of tea and a cooked breakfast. It’s a living piece of British motoring culture, a gathering ground for enthusiasts, and a welcoming pitstop for travelers of all kinds.
From Milk Bar to Motorcycling Legend
The story of Squires spans over seven decades of British road culture:
1954 – The Early Days: The story began in the heart of Sherburn-in-Elmet, opening as Squires Bradburys Milk Bar. During the 1950s and 60s, milk bars were the cool hangout spot for youth, and Squires quickly became the local hub for young motorcyclists—setting the tradition of the famous Wednesday night meetups.
1970s – Becoming a Household Name: Rebranded as Squires Coffee Bar, the venue’s reputation grew rapidly across the UK. It became a rite of passage for distance riders touring through Yorkshire.
2002 – Moving to the Big Stage: By the late 1990s, hundreds of bikes were packing into the original village center every week. To accommodate the massive crowds, Squires packed its bags and moved down the road on April 1, 2002, to a much larger site in Newthorpe.
What Makes Squires Café Special Today?
Step into Squires on any given weekend—or during its legendary Wednesday bike nights—and you’ll find an incredible cross-section of machines. From pristine vintage triumphs and custom choppers to track-ready supersports and classic cars, the parking lot is an ever-changing open-air museum.
Beyond the chrome and engines, Squires offers:
Hearty Fare: Traditional British cafe classics—think full English breakfasts, hot pies, giant burgers, and homemade cakes served alongside hot tea and coffee.
Events & Entertainment: Regular custom bike shows, auto meets, live music nights, and charity ride-outs keep the calendar packed all year long.
Camping & Stayovers: For travelers touring the North or attending multi-day meets, Squires offers on-site camping and caravan facilities.
A Welcoming Vibe: Whether you arrive on two wheels, four wheels, or on foot with the dog, the atmosphere is warm, friendly, and grounded.
